Reflection the Learning 2.0 experience…

How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals?
Learning 2.0 has been a rewarding experience, promoting lifelong learning through the introduction of valuable Web2.0 technology tools and features. In our world, technology is an integral part of daily communication necessary for every individual and organization and as a lifelong learner I realize the only constant in life is change, thus I will be studying for ever. My attitude is, any opportunity to learn something new, sign me up!

What were your favorite Learning 2.0 discoveries or exercises?
Creating avatars and spelling with flickr phots; I’m a visual person :)

Did anything surprise you?
Not particularly. However, it is fascinating to see how fast things change online as well as the abundance of information and resources available.

Was there enough help available when you needed it?
Yes, help was available when needed through our wonderful advocate Darlene Pearsall (hopefully everyone was lucky enough to have a knowledgeable guide).

What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?
Some suggestions:
• Have participants pick a convenient Learning 2.0 “buddy” to do and track the exercises with along the way.
• Remember that the exercises take a bit more time than anticipated, so allow, encourage and support having at a minimum a one hour designated time every week or every other week to stay on target.
• Also, since there are exercises for each of the Learning 2.0 assignment, have a place to submit each assignment (i.e. not one URL entry for two assignments)or condense the assignments into fewer based on related topics.

Would you like to see similar training opportunities as new library-relevant technologies emerge?
Yes, especially since we are now all advocates of life-long learning!

And, last one, if you could go back in time and tell yourself to either participate in the program or skip it, what would you do?
Definitely participate! Although I am a graduate student in Master of Communication in Digital Media and many of Learning 2.0 lessons included things I am familiar with and use, there were still plenty I was introduced to. In addition, being able to see and learn from other participants’ experiences was valuable.

In today’s busy society, people appreciate being able to listen on the go. Podcasting serves this need and similar to video, can be another great way for libraries to enhance communication within their organization. For example, options at KCLS could be listening to the Weekly Memo or hearing a message from the Director, Manager, or others. The future of communication combines all forms; written, auditory, visual. Podcasting is an important addition to a library’s information selection.

YouTube can be a great addition for KCLS communication and training among its 43 libraries, in some cases alleviating the need for physical travel to those locations.

• Video communication – portions of important programs, events, openings, press conferences, board meetings, etc. can be linked to a KCLS blog
• Video training – classes and trainings can be posted in short segments providing a full class of training or a mini class

Google labs is another great resource!

I explored three things:
• Google Trends (interesting to see who, where and what things are being searched online)
• Google Page Creator (very easy to use, however I find wordpress to be just as, if not more, efficient for basic web page creation)
• Google Web Accelorator (just downloaded, will keep you posted as to whether it actually improves the loading time of websites)

Google Docs and Zoho are useful for having access to one's personal documents on demand, anywhere with Internet connection. They also make sharing and collaborating with others easier. I will definitely be using these!

A popular definition of Library 2.0 is provided by Sarah Houghton:
Library 2.0 simply means making your library’s space (virtual and physical) more interactive, collaborative, and driven by community needs. Examples of where to start include blogs, gaming nights for teens, and collaborative photo sites. The basic drive is to get people back into the library by making the library relevant to what they want and need in their daily lives…to make the library a destination and not an afterthought.

Library 2.0 is an example of one thing true to life –change is constant!

It is great for libraries to be in touch with the present, transforming in step with evolving communities and patron needs, while keeping the library’s past and fundamental function; a public organization which provides information to the masses. Digital technology is a present-day resource offering tools that library’s can use to improve services. As for predicting the future of the library (…3.0…4.0…), only time will tell. One thing can be certain; the library will carry the documented history of its own evolution for patrons to access.

Wikis: Learn about Wikis and see how libraries are starting to use them

Wikis are useful for group communication and collaberation.

Libraries could use this for updating information such as the example of snow days, holiday closures and other special open and closing times for various library locations that are subject to change unexpectedly.

Team projects can also benefit from using wikis. Winter quarter our team used a wiki for communicating and sharing information for a group project. It was very helpful for uploading documents and editing all in one place.

RSS & Newsreaders: Add a library-themed blog to your Bloglines account

There are a number of RSS search tools - these include:

Blogline's Search tool. This lets you search for news feeds in addition to posts, citations and the web. Use the Search for Feeds option to locate RSS feeds you might be interested in.

Feedster. This is one of the largest collections of RSS feeds, Feedster lets you search for feeds in three categories: news, blogs & podcasts.

Topix.net. This search tool allows you to locate recent newsfeed items based upon keyword or phrase searching. The tool focuses specifically on news and media outlets RSS feeds for information, not weblogs.

Syndic8.com. An open directory of RSS feeds that contains thousands of RSS feeds that users have submitted.

Google Blog Search. This one is limited to blogs. Once you find the blog you are looking for, add the main blog URL just as you added those from your co-workers in our previous lesson.

Syndic8 and Google were the easiest to use for searching feeds by topic; however I usually add feeds by stumbling across a good site using a normal google search.

Photos and Images: Explore Flickr, a popular image hosting site

Scenario 1
Take a good look around Flickr and discover an interesting image that you want to blog about.
Blog about it and be sure to include either a link to the image or a copy of the image itself in your blog posting. For the later, you can either use Blogger's photo upload tool or Flickr's blogging tool (you'll need to set up a Flickr account for this).

Scenario 2
Create a free Flickr account. Use a digital camera to capture a few photos. Upload these to your Flickr account and tag at least one of the images “kcls27things” and mark it public. Create a blog post in your blog about your photo and the experience of getting it loaded to Flickr (be sure to include the image in your post - use Flickr's blogging tool or Blogger's photo upload feature.)
